Commercial Audio Applications

If you work in a factory, warehouse, school, office or industrial site, dine in a restaurant or stay in a hotel… you will hear and experience commercial audio applications being put to work throughout all industry and business sectors.

Commercial audio applications are widely employed across all business industry sectors. Traditional audio technology remains a solid and cost effective option, whilst leveraging IP network infrastructure investment with AoIP, IP sound systems & IP audio applications can offer integrated, scalable design and operational capabilities not possible with traditional audio.

Why employ commercial audio applications?

Businesses and the different industry sectors employ audio extensively. Some organisations, use audio very selectively. For example, a school may employ audio based class change to schedule their school bells. Others may use audio and music to support their marketing and branding strategy. Background music (BGM) is widely acknowledged to improve employee satisfaction and even boost productivity. Similarly, numerous studies have shown how music / BGM can influence mood and shopper behaviour to increase spending in retail settings. Probably the most widely used audio application is Public Address(PA) or ‘Tannoy’ for making wide area or site announcements. Tannoy systems are used for a variety of reasons. This could be for notices and advertisements but often is for providing general information or instruction.

Tannoy Systems

A ‘tannoy’ system is a mass notification voice announcement system – otherwise known as a Public Address (PA) system or ‘Paging’ system.

Despite most of us now carrying a smart phone with fantastic communications capabilities, a tannoy system remains the most immediate and effective way to make mass notification announcements for most commercial and industrial settings.

Todays tannoy systems offer much improved flexibility and user access options when compared to older basic microphone based traditional tannoy systems. Now, we have network connected AoIP IP tannoy with user access and announcement via phones, webapp, mobile app and even MS Teams.

  • Site communication & mass notification
  • Provide general information and update
  • Instructional announcements
  • Events and advertisements (audio branding)
  • Co-ordinate incident and security
  • Medical and first aid responder shoutout
  • Create atmosphere and ambiance
  • Elevate mood, improve customer experience
  • Sonic ‘branding’ – marketing, brand awareness
  • Impact customer behavior & spending
  • Improve employee productivity

Background Music (BGM)

Many business organisations and industry sectors use background music (BGM) to set atmosphere and lift mood. For example, BGM radio employed in factories and warehouses to improve employee satisfaction. Whilst shops, hotels and restaurants depend on curated BGM aligned to branding to improve customer and shopper experiences.

Studies have also found BGM has a positive effect in driving up efficiency & production and even influence shopper spending levels in hospitality and retail settings.

Lockdown & Security

Lockdown system applications provide controlled ‘mass notification’ announcements providing important security information and lockdown activation / instruction. They are generally used to make instructional announcements to initiate and control mass ‘in-vacuation’ into protected, safe internal rooms and areas.

Lockdown systems and mass notification has become increasing used throughout all industry sectors. This is especially true for education and school settings (school lockdown system), as well as larger local authority and commercial settings.

  • Serious Incident or Security concern
  • Suspicious person/s, intruder/s
  • Instruction from emergency services or police
  • Local air pollution from a fire or chemical release
  • Loose, roaming animal (typically a dog)
  • Local incident, disturbance or protest
  • Use MS Teams to make announcements
  • Site ‘SIP’ IP telephones to make announcements
  • Softphone tannoy ‘app’
  • GUI audio and zone control (phones and tablets)
  • Improved system control and management

MS Teams & Telephony

Integration of audio systems into LAN’s and wifi networks provide additional functionality and capability not found with traditional audio. For example, a traditional tannoy microphone is a fixed point audio device limiting user location flexibility.

MS Teams, site telephony (SIP) systems and even smart phone tannoy ‘app’ are integrated as audio applications to provide additional user flexibility when making site announcements (IP Tannoy).
